ILLUSTRATION: Color photo

DREW C. WILSON, The Virginian-Pilot

Snorkeler Jack Marr, an Outer Banks vacationer from Colorado,

surfaces near the wreck of the Civil War-era federal transport

Oriental on Friday as a large wave crashes into the hulk of the

vessel off the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. The vessel, one

of the few that can still be seen above the water along the outer

Banks, sank May 8, 1962. Thousands of ships are wrecked along the

Outer Banks. KEYWORDS: SHIPWRECKS
