In the early `80s, E. A. (Win) Winslow was a country fan.
``But it all sounded alike, so I went into rock,'' recalled. ``Then, rock began to sound alike, so I went back into country.''
That was when new country came on the scene, likened by Winslow to ``the Southern rock `n roll I grew up with in high school. That's why it appeals to people in my age group.''
The 35-year-old musician will join his Burdette Station buddies for a TGIF performance Friday at Constant's Wharf, and Aug. 22 and 23, at Shooters, on Armory Drive in Franklin.
Burdette Station was organized six years ago by Albert Atkins and Keith Helms.
``They did classic rock, then decided to go country. They changed the format and line-up. I came in with the transformation,'' Winslow said.
``Country is the reason people were booking bands. If you wanted to work, you had to go country.''
Burdette Station plays the music of Hank Williams Jr., Kevin Sharp, Tim McGraw, Confederate Railroad. But, you will also hear songs popularized by The Ramones, Poco, Van Morrison, Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels.
The band concentrates on top-40 country but adds rhythm and blues and Southern rock.
``We're varied,'' Winslow said - ``Sam Cooke to The Rolling Stones to James Taylor to Lynyrd Skynyrd.
And Sawyer Brown to Ricochet to Travis Tritt to Confederate Railroad.
Speaking of railroads, Burdette Station was named for a community and the railroad that once served it.
Burdette, between Walters and Franklin, is Atkins' home community.
The band rehearsed there, in his garage, but needed more space, so it skipped to the Helms home in Franklin.
From 1988 to 1993, Winslow rehearsed and performed with the husband-wife team of Susie and Ronnie Powell, now workng as a duet.
``We were Winslow, Powell and Powell. I'm not saying which Powell got the top billing of those two,'' he said.
``I got top billing in the trio because there was only one of me.''
When he is not playing music, Winslow enjoys Outer Banks surf fishing.
A quality systems coordinator for Allied Colloids, he is married to the former Nancy Miller. The couple lives in Suffolk.
Other band members are Rick Jennison of Windsor and Jessie Moore of Courtland.
``If you come out to hear us,'' Winslow said, ``you're coming out to have a good time.'' ILLUSTRATION: Photo courtesy of Burdette Station
