NEW SHOOTING EXTENDS STRING OF VIOLENCE IN PORTSMOUTH

The recent spate of violence continued in Portsmouth Thursday as a 24-year-old man was shot in the back around 11 a.m. in the 2600 block of Deep Creek Boulevard, police said.

The man was having an argument with several other men before the shooting, police said. The injuries were not life-threatening, and the victim was at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital Thursday evening. His condition was unknown.

He was the eighth person shot in Portsmouth in the last nine days. Police did not release the man's name.

Meanwhile, the man charged in the Aug. 5 murder of Jamarr Lamb was charged Thursday with other crimes relating to that case.

Licien Lore Mitchell, 20, was charged with malicious wounding, two counts of attempt to kill and three counts of using a firearm in commission of a felony.

When Lamb was killed, an 18-year-old friend was wounded, and, police said Thursday, shots were fired at two other people.

The friend has been released from Sentara Norfolk General. The two other people Mitchell allegedly shot at came forward during the investigation, police said.

Police did not release the names of the two people because it could jeopardize their safety, police spokeswoman Amber Whittaker said.

Interim Police Chief John Tucker released a statement Thursday expressing sympathy for the families of recent crime victims and emphasizing the importance of citizen involvement in fighting crime. Tucker also said that the violent crime rate in the city has been declining over the past few years.

On Monday, three men were shot in the Ida Barbour public housing community.

Also Monday, a 21-year-old man was hit in a drive-by shooting in the 100 block of Lexington Drive in the Lincoln Park housing project.

Early Sunday, 25-year-old Jermaine L. Faison of Chesapeake was killed in Norport Apartments at Sebago and Choctaw drives. KEYWORDS: SHOOTING INJURIES
