The jury in Zackary Anthony Carter's first-degree murder trial was unable to reach a verdict Friday after 4 1/2 hours of deliberation. The jurors will resume deliberations on Monday.
Carter, 15, is on trial in the Sept. 10 shooting death of his 8-year-old half sister, Cierra Rose Carter, in the family's home. Carter claims the shooting was accidental. Prosecutors say it was intentional.
It is the second time Carter has been tried on the charges. A mistrial was declared in June when a juror contacted an attorney not involved in the case once deliberations were under way. Carter was 14 at the time of the shooting. ILLUSTRATION: NHAT MEYER/The Virginian-Pilot
