MARINES FIRE CIVILIAN OVER AFFAIR WITH OFFICER'S WIFE

A civilian employee at this Marine base has been fired over accusations that he had an affair with the wife of an officer who was deployed abroad.

The civilian, Michael Brown, was dismissed Monday for improper personal conduct in the winter of 1995-96. His job as a base recreational program manager included coordinating support activities for spouses whose mates were away on assignment.

The action was unprecedented, the head of the union local representing federal civil servants at Camp LeJeune said Friday.

Uniformed military members can be punished for adultery under the military justice code, but the rule doesn't extend to civilians employed by the military. KEYWORDS: CIVILIAN SEXUAL MISCONDUCT MARINES ADULTERY
