AUTHOR TO SPEAK: Writer Mike D'Orso, author or co-author of a half dozen books, will be the leadoff speaker for a lecture series being introduced this fall at the Portsmouth Campus of Tidewater Community College.
The Provost Lecture Series will be a service program designed to bring interesting topics and speakers to the community. The lectures will be free and open to the public, but seating will be limited and reservations must be made by Aug. 15. For a reservation, call 822-2222.
All the lectures will be at 12:30 p.m. at the college's waterfront conference room. They are being sponsored by Cenit Bank.
Other speakers will be:
Ralph J. Nahra, president of the World Affairs Council of Greater Hampton Roads and director of analysis and research at NATO/SACLANT headquarters.
Dr. Adolphus Hailstork, composer-in-residence and professor of music at Norfolk State University.
D'Orso will speak Tuesday, Nahra on Sept. 16 and Hailstork on Nov. 18.
D'Orso will discuss his latest book, ``Like Judgment Day: The Ruin and Redemption of a Town Called Rosewood.'' The writer also will discuss the complex process of collecting and interpreting oral history.
In his talk, Nahra will cover several world issues including Middle East challenges, NATO, lessons of the Bosnian conflict and America's role in establishing stability around the world. He has had more than 20 years experience in international affairs and has been an advisor to 10 Supreme Allied Commanders.
Hailstork has written various works for solo voices, chamber ensembles, bands and orchestras, will discuss his evolution as a composer and some of his music.
