Felton A. Gibson, 88, a former educator who retired in 1982 as a field representative who recruited for VISTA, Volunteers in Service to America, died Aug. 4, 1997, at Greater Southeast Community Hospital. He had a kidney ailment.
Mr. Gibson was born in Statesville, N.C., and had lived in Washington off and on since childhood.
He was a graduate of Armstrong High School and Hampton University. He received a master's degree in education from Boston University and a master's degree in journalism from Kansas State University.
From 1933 to 1942, he was a teacher and school principal in Northumberland County, Va. For the next two decades, he was a USO Club Director in Wyoming, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Hawaii and Virginia. He went to work for the Peace Corps in 1963 as a field representative and recruiter and later joined VISTA.
He was a Mason and a member of the Calvary Episcopal Church, Washington.
In 1955, he began special work with The Virginian-Pilot, which included feature stories, news, sports and obituaries.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Thelma Gibson of Washington; daughter, Andrea Green of Fort Washington, Md.; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
