HERBERT JENKINS JR.

Herbert Jenkins Jr., 80, of the 500 block of E. Main St. died Aug. 16, 1997, in his home.

Mr. Jenkins was born in Bertie County and was a member of the Aulander Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Wake Forest University and had served as a warehouseman for Basnight's Tobacco Warehouses for 42 years. He was an agribusinessman and a longtime agricultural leader in the Roanoke Chowan area. Mr. Jenkins was a member of the Aulander Ruritan Club, the Davie Masonic Lodge No. 39, AF&AM and the Bertie County Farm Bureau. He was a retired past member of the Board of Trustees of Wachovia Bank in Ahoskie, and a past member of the Chowan College Board of Trustees.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Wright ``Skippy'' Jenkins; daughters, Sue Joyner and her husband, Jim, of Greensboro, Peggy Brinkley and her husband, Jack, of Aulander; son, Richard Herbert ``Dick'' Jenkins and his wife, Annie, of Raleigh; sister, Elizabeth J. Nelson of Aulander; grandchildren, Clint and Ginger Brinkley, Lauren and Hannah Jenkins; great-grandchild, Alex Brinkley; nephew, Bert Steimle, and a niece, Beth Parker. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Tripp Joyner.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Aulander Baptist Church by the Revs. Robbie Parker and Alan Beard. Burial will be in Aulander Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday. Memorial donations may be made to the Aulander Rescue Squad. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge.
