Dr. Raymond Vincent van Wolkenten Jr., 54, died Aug. 16, 1997, in his residence after a valiant battle with cancer. He was born in Los Angeles.
Dr. van Wolkenten was a family physician. He also was a professor and vice chairman for clinical affairs in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School. He held many administrative appointments and advisory positions at the medical school and with Sentara. He cared for his patients deeply.
He received his B.S. degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, his master's and Ph.D. from Georgia Tech and his M.D. from the Medical College of Virginia. He served his residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School. He was a member of the Norfolk Rotary Club. He was a Navy veteran and served in Vietnam.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Murphy van Wolkenten; two daughters, Kristin D. and Megan L. van Wolkenten, both of Norfolk; sister, Jaymes V. Turnbull of Poland; and his in-laws, Audrey S. and Alden D. Murphy of Norfolk.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in First Lutheran Church by the Rev. James G. Cobb. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Eastern Virginia Medical School. Cox Funeral Home is in charge. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
