Mayor to participate

in ground-breaking

of community center

Mayor James W. Holley III will participate in the ground-breaking for a community center building at 3800 Peachtree Lane East at 3 p.m. Saturday. The event coincides with the 1997 Peachtree Neighborhood Picnic set for the same day from noon to 4 p.m.

The planning and construction of this facility is a joint effort by the Churchland Rotary Club and the Peachtree community.

For the past year, the Churchland Rotary Club has been involved in an ``Adopt a Neighborhood'' endeavor with the community.

They have completed a number of projects in the neighborhood, such as helping secure equipment and installing a playground for older children.

The facility was dedicated at a picnic on Aug. 31, 1996.

Democrats plan open house

for candidate on Thursday

An open house is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Democratic headquarters of Johnny Joannou, a candidate for the House of Delegates. The headquarters is at 5758 Churchland Blvd. in Churchland Shopping Center.

The public is invited.

Joannou, a lawyer and former state senator, is one of three candidates for the seat vacated by Bill Moore when he was appointed judge of the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

Dan Evans, a Portsmouth businessman, is the Republican candidate, and Vice Mayor Johnny Clemons is running as an Independent.

Virginia Beach - Fort Story will formally open its new Mini Mall in ceremonies at 10 a.m. Tuesday. The facility replaces a World War II-era branch store and Mini Mart gas station. The $2.4 million structure was funded with earnings from the patronage of other Army and Air Force Exchange stores. The store includes a clothing store, barber shop, laundry, dry cleaning and alteration store, sandwich shop and gasoline station.
