J. Stedman Rhew, 82, died Aug. 17, 1997, in Portsmouth.

He was born in Roxboro, N.C., and retired as shop manager of Virginia Carolina Tire Co. He was a member of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church.

Survivors include his wife, Annie Strickland Rhew; three sons, James S. ``Jim'' Rhew Jr. of Raleigh, N.C., Steven W. Rhew and his wife, Katherine of Winston-Salem, N.C., Joel S. Rhew and his wife, Laurie, of Chesapeake; two sisters, Fannie Leen Lee of Louisburg, N.C., Dora Dixon of Bountiful, Utah; a brother, Bedford Rhew of Bountiful; six grandchildren, James S. Rhew III and Alan F. Rhew, both of Raleigh, N.C., Nora Rhew and Andrew Rhew, both of Chesapeake, Joel Rhew and Ellie Rhew, both of Winston-Salem, N.C.

A private funeral service will be held Wednesday in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jane Flaherty presiding. Family will be at Snellings Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, from 7 to 8 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Heart Association. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
