Grizzly bears, wolves and other wildlife - such as this herd of elk

grazing in a meadow - are among the attractions that lure millions

of two-legged visitors to Yellowstone National Park each year. At

125 years old, the land of Old Faithful, spectacular waterfalls and

bubbling mud is operated as a preserve, not just a playground.

Old Faithful is not the biggest or most dependable geyser in

Yellowstone, but it remains the park's main attraction. Tales of the

area's geothermal qualities went largely unbelieved until 1871, when

a government-funded expedition documented the features. A year

later, public pressure led to the creation of Yellowstone National

Park.
