LOCAL SCENE

NORFOLK

WHEATON ON BANK ADVISORY BOARD: James J. Wheaton, a member of the law firm of Willcox & Savage, was appointed to the Great Bridge/Greenbrier Advisory Board of Cenit Bank. He is a longtime resident of Chesapeake and a member of the Chesapeake School Board.

STEARNS HEADS AIRPORT COMMISSION: The board of commissioners of the Norfolk Airport Authority elected Deborah K. Stearns as chairman of the board for 1997-98. Stearns, who has been on the authority's governing body since 1988, has served as vice chairman for four years. She is chief operating officer and executive vice president of Goodman Segar Hogan Hoffler.

AIR PASSENGERS SOAR: Norfolk International Airport reported an 8.63 percent increase in passenger activity in July with 295,500 passengers. The number was 272,025 passengers in July 1996. In other activity, 4.6 million pounds of cargo was shipped in and out of the airport in June. This represents a 9.4 percent decrease from June 1996's 5.1 million pounds.

FIVE APPOINTED TO EVMS BOARD: Five community leaders have been appointed to three-year terms on the Medical College of Hampton Roads Board of Visitors, the governing body of Eastern Virginia Medical School: Henry U. ``Sandy'' Harris, vice president of Virginia Investment Counselors Inc. in Norfolk; Dr. W.R. Scott Curtis Jr. of Obstetric & Gynecologic Associates of Hampton; Edward L. Hamm Jr., president of E.L. Hamm & Associates; Arthur J. Kamp, a lawyer with David & Kamp, and Alan E. Gollihue, president and chief executive officer of the Portsmouth General Hospital Foundation.

HAMPTON

DOWNTOWN RETAIL ACTIVITY INCREASES: Since June, more than 38,000 square feet of office and retail space has been leased in Downtown Hampton, according to the Downtown Hampton Development Partnership. Twelve new offices, three new retail shops and one new restaurant have brought an additional 75 employees to the downtown. To recognize these milestones, a reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Arnold Building, 48 W. Queens Way, downtown's newest building.

VIRGINIA BEACH

MARSHALL VICE PRESIDENT OF TECHNOLOGY AT CREDIT UNION: Kevin M. Marshall was named vice president of technology at Chartway Federal Credit Union. He was formerly director of information services at International Family Entertainment.
