Walter ``Wally'' Henry Smead Sr., 74, of the 100 block of Powhatan Trail and formerly of Portsmouth, died Aug. 22, 1997.
A native of Milwaukee, Wisc., Mr. Smead was a son of the late Walter Stewart and Mary Ann Bisel Smead and the husband of Elizabeth Cannon Smead. He was retired from the preventative maintenance department of Portsmouth Naval Hospital and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Portsmouth Masonic Lodge, the D.A.V. and the recent president of the Chowan Ruritan Club.
Surviving other than his wife is his son, Walter Henry Smead Jr. and his wife, Pat, of Portsmouth; four stepdaughters, Mary Ann Runyon of Newport News and Elizabeth Dianne Orrell, Cynthia Moehring and Billie Rose, all of Edenton; three brothers, Charlie, Louie and James Smead, all of Milwaukee; 13 grandchildren, Lori Smead Rhoads, Christina M. Smead and Mark A. Smead, all of Portsmouth, Michael A. Runyon of Fort Pierce, Fla., Audra D. Wagner of Hampton, Tracy D. Sanchez of Guam, Joey Mines, Jon Mines, Jackie Martin, Leslie Moehring and Matthew Verzwyvelt, all of Edenton, N.C., Lance Cpl. W. Charlie Marshburn of the U.S.M.C. and Stephanie Marshburn of Elizabeth City, N.C.; and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Evans Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Suffolk. The family will receive visitors at the home of Walter H. Smead Jr., 1705 Leckie St., Portsmouth, following the graveside service. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Chowan Ruritan Club, 3108 Kelly's Beach Road, Tyner, N.C. 27980. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
