PAUL P. BASCOM

Paul Parker Bascom, 70, died Aug. 23, 1997, in his home.

He was born in Norman, Okla., and had lived in Norfolk since 1954. A retired naval officer, he was an active member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, serving as an usher for 40 years and also as president of the church bowling league for many years. He was a member of Elks Lodge BPOE (NU)38, was editor of their newsletter, ``The Gavel,'' and was named Elk of the Year, 1996-97. Additionally, he volunteered with the Virginia Opera Association for six years, acting as volunteer coordinator for four years. He was a genealogist for the Bascom Family Association, corresponding with family members from all over the world and owns the copyrights to the family genealogy. He was predeceased by his son, Dennis Bascom.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Margaret Bascom; his mother, Roxanna Bascom of Mesa, Ariz.; three daughters, Kathleen Bascom of San Francisco, Peg Bascom of Princeton, N.J., and Ellen Petersheim of Norfolk; a son, Timothy Bascom of Lebanon, Mo.; four grandchildren, Sean Bascom of Virginia Beach, Jessica Renz, Caitlin Burchfield and Ashley Ankrom, all of Norfolk.

A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. today in St. Pius X Catholic Church with Father William Dale presiding. A funeral mass will be said Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Burial rites will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery. An Elks prayer service will be held at graveside. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church Nuncy Sabato Building Fund or the American Cancer Society.
