THE CHARTER BOAT SEA JAY IV WON THE ANNUAL

The charter boat Sea Jay IV won the annual Virginia Beach Marlin Tournament by releasing 10 white marlin Friday and Saturday.

The boat is skippered out of Pirate's Cove Marina near Nags Head, N.C., by Kenny Sexton, a Virginia Beach native.

The Sea Jay IV scored 1,060 points, 100 for each released billfish and an additional 10 points for each tagged billfish.

Second went to the charter boat Chaos, skippered out of Rudee Inlet in Virginia Beach by Steve Richardson. It scored 760 points for seven releases, six tagged.

The private boat Eggcitement finished third with 640 points for six releases, four tagged. The boat is skippered by Buddy Brizendine.

Headquartered at the Virginia Beach Fishing Center on Rudee, the contest attracted 42 boats. They released 100 white marlin and six blue marlin.

Wells Hula of Charles City was named the event's top junior angler for releasing four whites. He was aboard the Goose Chase.

Hula also took the dolphin lead in the annual Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament with a 40-pounder.

The charter boat No Problem out of Fisherman's Wharf Marina at Rudee won the combined tuna, dolphin and wahoo division, while second went to the charter boat High Hopes, also out of the marina.

Steve Sadoiwski skippers the No Problem, David Wright the High Hopes.

The team of Tim Schaler and Mark London of Chesapeake won the final tournament of the year for Region 7 of the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society with a combined largemouth bass catch of 18-15 1/2 pounds.

Carlos Williams of Chesapeake had the lunker at 4-13. The contest attracted 78 two-person teams and was held on the Chickahominy River out of Powhatan Resort.

Elsewhere, Larry Campbell of Virginia Beach took the king mackerel lead in the Virginia tournament with a 31-pounder, boated off Virginia Beach on the Fishhead.

Melvin Elder of Machipongo missed gaining the contest's flounder lead when his flatfish, caught out of Oyster on the Wide Open, weighed 11 pounds, three ounces. The leader weighs 11-8.
