Marie Gwaltney Garner, 62, of the 4800 block of Godwin Blvd., a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, died Aug. 25, 1997.
A native of Isle of Wight County, she was the daughter of the late Doc and Ethel Clements Gwaltney. Mrs. Garner was a member of Oakland Christian Church, the Loyal Fellowship Class, Circle 2 of the Ladies Fellowship, the flower and altar committees. She served on the Becky Godwin Scholarship Fund from its inception and was a choir member for 40 years. She was past president of the Greater Chuckatuck Civic League. Mrs. Garner was retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a program assistant after 30 years of service.
Survivors include her husband, Irvin A. Garner; daughter and son-in-law, Joan Garner and Thomas C. Evans of Suffolk; a granddaughter, Carla Joan Speer of Suffolk; three sisters, Elizabeth G. Whitley of Newport News, Jean G. Johnson of Zuni, Barbara G. Powell of Franklin; brother, Dale A. Gwaltney of Hampton.
A funeral will be conducted Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Oakland Christian Church by the Rev. Mark Burns. Burial will be in Holly Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the R.W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Marie had requested that donations be made to the Becky Godwin Scholarship Fund or to Oakland Christian Church Building Fund, P.O.
