Langley mosquito

spraying harmful

to bees, not humans

Langley Air Force Base and parts of the surrounding community will be sprayed Wednesday and Thursday to control mosquitoes and help prevent the spread of mosquito-borne diseases.

A specially equipped C-130 aircraft from the 757th Airlift Squadron, Youngstown Air Reserve Base, Ohio, will do the spraying.

The flights are scheduled between 5 and 8:30 p.m. Areas to be sprayed include Langley Air Force Base proper, Hampton, Poquoson, southern portions of Newport News and York County.

The insecticide is not harmful to most humans and animals. The spray is fatal to bees, however. Area beekeepers should protect their hives from the spray. Residents allergic to Dibrom should remain indoors for at least 30 minutes after the spraying.

For details on areas to be sprayed, call 726-2946 in Hampton; 868-3590 in Poquoson; 890-3784 in York County; 249-5744 in Newport News; 878-2585 in Fort Eustis; and 764-2018 in Langley Air Force Base.

NORFOLK

Public invited to comment

on proposed zoning change

A proposal to change the zoning and land use of two adjoining tracts on the west side of Church Street between Augusta Avenue and 18th Street will go before the City Council tonight.

The public can comment on the plans at 7:30 p.m. in the council's meeting room on the 11th floor of City Hall.

The changes, proposed by the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority, would create space for businesses to locate after the street is widened from two lanes to four lanes beginning next summer.

A row of businesses on the west side of Church Street in the 1500 to 1700 blocks - including Graves Funeral Home, the Acey Ducey Restaurant, the Goody Goody barbershop and a strip of vacant storefronts - will be razed to make way for the widening.

The redevelopment agency has purchased or is in the process of buying the land that would be rezoned.
