HELEN W. SAWYER

Helen Wood Sawyer, 96, of the 900 block of Cambridge Place, died August 25, 1997.

Mrs. Sawyer was a native of Elizabeth City, N.C., and resided in Norfolk since 1920. She was the widow of Irving B. Sawyer. She was long an active member in church and civic organizations in Norfolk. She had been a Sunday School teacher for more than 60 years and active in many Baptist church organizations.

She was a member of Talbot Park Baptist Church in Norfolk and a member and teacher of its Esther Bible Class. She was a past president and leader in the Women's Missionary Union of the Baptist church. She sponsored the organization of the Norfolk Baptist Church Library Association, also the Virginia Baptist Church Library Association and served as president of both organizations.

She was president of the YWCA of Norfolk and of the Tidewater Area for three years and served on the Board for 15 years. She was a co-sponsor of the organization of the Virginia Beach YWCA branch during her time as president of the YWCA. She was a past president of the Larchmont Garden Club and served as an active member for 24 years. She was a life member of the Federation of Garden Clubs of Norfolk and vicinity, also a life member of the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs Inc.

Survivors include two granddaughters, Mrs. Pamela Wunnenberg Wheary and Mrs. Janice Wunnenberg McCarty, both of Norfolk; four great-grandchildren, John C. Wheary, Helen W. McCarty, Erin E. McCarty and Linnea A. McCarty and other nieces and nephews.

A Church service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Talbot Park Baptist Church by Dr. Harry T. Dixon Jr. and the Rev. Keith Martin. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Talbot Park Baptist Church, BBN Radio, Charlotte, N.C., or the Charity of the Donor's choice. The family will receive friends in H.D.Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, will be handling the arrangements.
