VIRGINIA BEACH MAN KILLED IN CONSTRUCTION SITE ACCIDENT

A Virginia Beach man was killed Tuesday afternoon in an industrial accident in the 3700 block of Indian River Road.

The man was identified as 31-year-old Gene Gossman, of the 1500 block of Crescent Point Lane.

Workers from Mid-Eastern Builders Inc. of Chesapeake were installing cement sewer pipes about 1:35 p.m. when the accident occurred, said police spokesman Lou Thurston. Gossman was standing in a large hole as an excavator was removing dirt from the hole near the sewer pipes.

Somehow, Gossman became pinned between a bucket of the excavator and the cement pipe, police said.

He was taken to the trauma unit at Virginia Beach General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:43 p.m.

The accident is being investigated by homicide detectives and by OSHA, Thurston said. KEYWORDS: ACCIDENT GENERAL FATALITY
