WEEKLY BRIEFING

IN GENERAL

SHIP VISITS: Three Navy ships will be open from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The guided missile frigate Kauffman and the guided missile destroyer Barry will be at Norfolk Naval Station. Visitors should enter through Gate 2. The tank landing ship Lamoure County will be at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base. Visitors should enter through Gate 1.

RE-ENACTMENT: The Battle of Fort Fisher will be re-enacted from 10 a.m. to noon on Sept. 20, at Huntington Park in Newport News. After the battle, Marine Corps Through the Ages will offer static displays of weapons, vehicles, aircraft and uniforms, along with camouflage face painting for children at the Marine Corps Training Center, 75th and Warwick Blvd., Newport News, until 5 p.m.

SILENT AUCTION: A silent auction will be held on Sept. 6, at Fort Story Officers Club to benefit the Hawkeye-Greyhound Memorial Fund. The fund was established to pay educational costs for the children of 10 officers killed in plane crashes in 1992 and 1993. Admission is $12 per person. Previewing begins at 7 p.m., with bidding from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Items valued at more than $5,000 have been donated to the auction, including vacations, tickets to special events and attractions, golf packages, celebrity autographed items, auto care, landscaping and more. RETIREE DAY: Retiree Appreciation Day will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Fort Eustis Club. Workshops of interest to retirees will be held. Breakfast is free, lunch is $7.50. To register or for information, call 878-2953.

MEDIEVAL NIGHT: Medieval Night will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 6 at Bunker 807 at Fort Story. Musicians and magicians will entertain guests during dinner. SEAT BELTS: Seven local Navy commands were honored Monday for use of seat belts. They achieved a buckle-up rate of 70 percent or more during six weeks of the Drive Smart ``Battle of the Belts'' challenge. Naval Security Group Activity Northwest was the highest with a 98 percent buckle-up rate.

Comings and goings

Cmdr. Paul K. Susalla has relieved Cmdr. William P. Garland as commanding officer of the destroyer Hayler.

Cmdr. Deon A. Harkey will be relieved as commanding officer of Tactical Air Control Squadron 22 on Sept. 5. Harkey will become chief staff officer for Patrol Wing 5 in Brunswick, Maine. Cmdr. John H. Harrington will take over.

Col. Scott M. Bergeron has been relieved as garrison commander of the Army Transportation Center at Fort Eustis by Col. Richard S. Gula. Gula was deputy assistant commandant of the Army Transportation School. Bergeron will retire.

Capt. Jeffrey W. Baker has relieved Capt. Russell E. Harris as commanding officer of the Norfolk Submarine Training Facility. Baker was information warfare officer for Carrier Group 8. Harris is retiring after 24 years of service.
