ROBERT E. WHITEHEAD JR.

Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Robert Edward Whitehead Jr. died Aug. 29, 1997, at the Hampton Veterans Hospital after a long illness.

Mr. Whitehead was a native of Princess Anne County, and was born in the historic Pleasant Hall Mansion in the Kempsville Section of Virginia Beach. The Ponds School of Music also operated out of Pleasant Hall from 1972 to 1979, while Mr. Whitehead was in the U.S. Army. A graduate of William and Mary College, he was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara A. Whitehead; a daughter, Elizabeth Bryant; a brother, Phillip Whitehead; two sisters, Elizabeth Gray and Susan Byars; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Dicolina Bryant Champ; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Kellum Funeral Home, Pleasant Hall/Kempsville Chapel. Interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens with military honors. Visitation at the funeral home will be Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
