Kathryn Young Taylor, 103, died on Sunday, Aug. 31, 1997, at Sentara Nursing Center.
She was born in San Antonio, Texas, the daughter of James Mills Young and Augusta Ayres Young. She was the widow of Robert Floyd Taylor Sr., a native of Hampton. She attended the University of Texas where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority.
A resident of Norfolk since 1929, Mrs. Taylor taught social dancing under the auspices of the P.T.A. in many of Norfolk's public schools. During World War II, she organized the first Teen Canteen at Larchmont School. Also during the war years, she worked many volunteer hours in the Red Cross Blood Processing program, and she was supervisor of volunteers for the night shift at the Aircraft Warning Center.
For 35 years she was a member of the Board of Directors, Virginia Federation of Music Clubs, and was a life member. She was a former president of the Keynote Music Club, the Norfolk Panhellenic Association, and the Holland Park Garden Club.
She was preceded in death by her sons, Lt. Col. Robert F. Taylor, Jr. U.S.A.F., retired, and Edward S. Taylor. Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Robert F. Taylor Jr. (Janice) of Sumter, S.C.; Mrs. Edward S. Taylor (Sara) of Virginia Beach; and daughter, Nan Taylor Papageorge of Williamsburg; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Her family and many friends will miss her outrageous puns, her charming poems, her love of card playing, and her courageous spirit. We celebrate the gift of her long life!
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Old Donation Episcopal Church, 4449 N. Witchduck Road by the Rev. Joy Walton, the Rev. Cynthia Taylor and the Rev. C. Thomas Holliday. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends in the parish hall of the church immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent to the Building Fund, Old Donation Church, 4449 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach, 23455, or to the donor's favorite charity.
