6:50 a.m. - Magnolia Dr./Hillwood St. Bus Stop, Portsmouth.
``It was quiet at the bus stop this morning. There were only two people. A third person ran up as the bus opened its doors.''
- Brehon Harrison, sophomore
7:15 a.m. - Granby High School, Norfolk.
``It's not the Granby High I knew. We had renovations. It's totally different - a really different floor plan. Teachers were in the hallways to help students find their way to classes. The air conditioning and the bright hallways were the best surprises, but the skylight in the cafeteria was pretty good, too. It was real neat.''
- Caitlin Stine, senior
9 to 10:30 a.m. - Bayside High School, Virginia Beach.
``At second bell, coach Ron Jenkins started talking about freshmen. He said things like: `The loudest in the hall, the one crying in the hall, who's it going to be? A freshman.' Sure, as sophomores, we all laughed, but in reality, we knew that he said the same thing about us last year. We didn't care because, as I said, it was last year.''
- Barbara Wray, sophomore
10:30 a.m. to noon - Churchland High School, Portsmouth.
``My AP English teacher told us: `It will probably take me about two days to remember all of your names and a little longer to know enough about you to joke on you.' ''
- Sonya Islam, senior
10:45 a.m. - Tallwood High School, Virginia Beach.
``In AP statistics, we were listening to the teacher, and this one guy who sits to the left of me was making little comments, nothing rude or anything. He was really friendly with the teacher. He was saying, `Don't get Ms. Singleton mad.' Then he was talking about her Afro and how she used to have an Afro with a pick. Everyone was kind of quiet and looked back at him and he said, `Oh, I had Ms. Singleton for the last two years.' ''
- Nicole Hannans, senior KEYWORDS: BACK TO SCHOOL
