COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG TO TRIM WORK FORCE TO HELP CUT COSTS

The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation may cut between 50 and 75 positions by year's end, President Robert C. Wilburn revealed in a letter to employees this week.

Foundation spokesman Tim Andrews Wednesday would not disclose which departments might be affected by the cuts, which would represent less than 2 percent of the foundation's work force of 3,500.

The possible layoffs are part of the foundation's long-term efforts to control costs. Despite record gifts from donors, Colonial Williamsburg faces depleted cash reserves, losses in its hotel operations and the lingering effects of several years of weak attendance growth.

Some cuts have already occurred.
