Russell M. Mentzer, 72, husband of the late Katherine S. of Virginia Beach, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 1997, at Virginia Beach General Hospital.
He was a staff sergeant of the U.S. Army in the European theater during World War II, where he was captured and escaped, but was later injured in action. He was proud to have worked at the Kennedy Space Center during the Apollo program and the first manned exploration of the moon. He retired in January of 1988 from the Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Norwood (Ted), and sister, Ruth of Pottstown, Pa.
Survivors include his sons, Russell S. of Minneapolis and his wife, Patricia, Steven and Robert of Virginia Beach, and grandchildren, Russell F., Katherine S. of Tampa, Fla., Jessica N. of Virginia Beach.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Kellum Funeral Home, Bonney Road Chapel. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
