If you want to learn about what's tops on this month's book group list, watch Oprah.
If you want hear about what's going on in education, ``The School Picture'' might be a better bet.
Superintendent Timothy R. Jenney's interview show, which airs on VBTV-Channel 48, is 6 months old. Guests have ranged from local legislators and district staff to business people and leaders in higher education.
The two guests appearing on the program in September are nationally known figures in education. Jenney recently went to Washington to interview U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley and Washington, D.C., Superintendent of Schools and retired Lt. Gen. Julius Becton.
Jenney said the show has always tried to focus on ``interesting people.'' Riley, whom Jenney knew from South Carolina, has played a role in many of President Clinton's education initiatives. Becton, because he does not come from an education background, brings a different perspective to the superintendency, Jenney said.
The show with Becton focuses on administrative changes he made to deal with a school system in crisis. It will air Fridays, Sept. 5 and 12, at 6:30 p.m.; Saturdays, Sept. 6 and 13, at 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., and again on the 13th at 7:30 p.m.; Monday, Sept. 8, at 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.; and Wednesday, Sept. 10, at 11 a.m..
The show featuring Riley deals with the changes facing the nation's schools. It will run Mondays, Sept. 15 and 22, at 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.; Wednesdays, Sept. 17 and 24, at 11 a.m.; Fridays, Sept. 19 and 26, at 6:30 p.m.; and Saturdays, Sept. 20 and 27, at 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. ILLUSTRATION: Superintendent Timothy Jenney
