NORFOLK
Lorraine Flood, coordinator of the Comer/Zigler (CoZi) Initiative for Norfolk Public Schools, will serve on a speakers panel in Washington today to discuss the importance of preparing preschool children for school.
This forum allows people from various backgrounds to address the Senate Democratic task force on early childhood development. The task force, known as ``Right Start 2000: A Strike Force for Kids,'' was formed in June by Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle to look at the best ways to address the educational, health and safety needs of children in their first eight years of life.
CoZi Initiative is a program developed at Yale University that combines early childhood and family support services in schools. Bowling Park, Monroe, Jacox and Roberts Park elementary schools use the CoZi model.
Norview Middle School received the Outstanding Middle School Technology Education Award at the August Summer Technology Education Conference held in Roanoke. The school also will receive the Virginia Outstanding Middle School Technology Education award at the next International Technology Education Association Conference.
SUFFOLK
Jennifer Raspberry, a 1997 graduate of Nansemond River High School, won national Future Business Leaders of America honors over the summer.
She placed fourth in the country in the Job Description Manual event. The National Leadership Conference of the FBLA was held June 29 to July 4 in Anaheim, Calif. The top 10 winners in each category were recognized.
Closer to home, Lakeland High School was honored as having Virginia's Outstanding Technology Education Program of the Year for secondary schools.
The Virginia Technology Education Association made the award at its summer conference Aug. 6 through 8 in Roanoke. Lakeland's program has undergone revision in the past four years, adding computers, robotics, other resources and new courses to prepare students for the transition from school to work.
Teachers also are working with professors at Paul D. Camp Community College in writing a dual-credit high school and college program for industrial technical jobs.
VIRGINIA BEACH
Shelley Deneau, a teacher at White Oaks Elementary School, took part this summer in a National Aeronautics and Space Administration workshop at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
A national panel chose 25 experienced teachers to participate based on their backgrounds and interest in math, science and technology education. During the two-week workshop, teachers learned about the latest advancements in aeronautics and space projects from nationally acclaimed scientists and engineers. They also worked with educational coordinators and their colleagues to share teaching strategies and techniques.
