ESTRANGED HUSBAND KILLS WIFE'S MOTHER AND SELF, POLICE TOLD

Police are investigating an apparent murder-suicide in which a woman said her estranged husband broke into her residence, fatally shot her mother and then turned the gun on himself.

The woman, whose name was not released, was not injured.

Police were still attempting to determine late Thursday exactly what happened and what may have prompted the violence.

Don Rimer, a police spokesman, said the first call for help came in at 9:05 p.m. from the Pelican Watch Apartments in the 3400 block of MacKenzie Bay Landing, off Rosemont Road near the Virginia Beach campus of Tidewater Community College.

The names of the deceased were being withheld until relatives could be notified. Their bodies were to be sent to the State Medical Examiner's office in Norfolk for examination.

Based on information provided by the woman, Rimer said the husband ``kicked in the door'' of the apartment and ``ordered the mother into the bedrooom . . KEYWORDS: MURDER SUICIDE SHOOTING
