MUSIC BACHARACH AND BUDDHISTS COME TO TOWN

Sacred Music/Sacred Dance

Willett Hall, Sept. 19

Instant karma's gonna get you. This performance, featuring Tibetan Buddhist lamas from the Drepung Loseling Monastery, offers traditional music and dance, multiphonic singing and elaborate costumes. Presented by The Arts Center of The Portsmouth Museums and Portsmouth Community Concerts.

Burt Bacharach

Chrysler Hall, Sept. 20

His music's featured in ``My Best Friend's Wedding.'' McCoy Tyner cut a tribute album. He's been sampled by Yo La Tengo. Burt Bacharach is hip again, like when he was writing hits for the Carpenters and Dionne Warwick. Part of the Virginia Symphony's Norfolk Southern Pops Series.

Fred Hersch Trio

Chandler Recital Hal, ODU, Oct. 6

A prolific pianist, Hersch won raves for the recent ``Passion Flower,'' on which he covered the music of Billy Strayhorn. He'll be joined by bassist Drew Gress and drummer Tom Rainey, the same trio nominated for a 1993 Grammy. Part of the F. Ludwig Diehn Concert Series.

Riders in the Sky

Williamsburg Regional Library, Oct. 12

Harmony, harmony, harmony. It'll be the order of the evening when Ranger Doug, Too Slim and Woody ``King of the Cowboy Fiddlers'' Paul bring their silver tongues and good-natured bunkhouse humor to Billsburg. Think ``Riders Radio Theater,'' only without the radio.

Isaac Stern

Chrysler Hall, Oct. 18

The great violinist will be in Norfolk for this year's Virginia Symphony Gala Concert. So far, the program includes a Rossini overture and a Bartok concerto for orchrestra. No word yet on the violin piece. Maybe it will be Henri Dutilleux's beautiful L'Arbre des Songes, written for Stern in 1985.

The Tender Land

Harrison Opera House, Jan. 23-Feb. 1

Virginia Opera often presents its most daring productions after the holidays. Last season it was ``Julius Caesar.'' This year, Peter Mark and his crew make their first foray into the American landscape of Aaron Copland. In keeping with the composer's orchestral works, it's about family and fortitude.

International Military Tattoo

Scope, April 24-25

The tattoo was a big hit at last year's inaugural Virginia Waterfront International Arts Festival. How big? It almost sold out Scope. This year, the organizers are putting it on twice and bringing in a fife and drum corps from Denmark.

Betty Buckley

Ogden Hall, Hampton University, April 25

Of all the Tonys ``Cats'' collected, only one went to a performer. Betty Buckley won it for her memorable turn as Grizabella. Think that song called . Commission's Great Performers Series.

Milladoiro

Wells Theater, May 1

While the roots are Northwest Spain, that's just the starting point. Now in its 20th year, Milladoiro incorporates Celtic, medieval, classical, jazz and popular music - in short, something for everyone. Presented by the Tidewater Classical Guitar Society. ILLUSTRATION: Color photos
