Here's how to gain access to information about economic and
business activity in the region:
HAMPTON ROADS PLANNING DISTRICT COMMISSION
The commission, made up of elected officials of cities and
counties in the region, monitors economic and demographic activity
in the region. The commission staff routinely studies population,
economic and business trends in Hampton Roads. The commission's
library has several business-related resources, including aerial
photographs of the region, demographic and housing data and counts
of traffic volume on area streets and highways.
Reports: The staff compiles two annual publications - Hampton
Roads Data Book and Hampton Roads Economic Outlook - and periodic
reports on trends in population and economic development.

OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY FORECASTING PROJECT, ODU College of
Business and Public Administration
The forecasting project has a web page with historical data and
forecasts for employment, housing, port tonnage, tourism, retail
sales and other sectors of the Hampton Roads economy.

COLLEGE OF WILLIAM & MARY, BUREAU FOR BUSINESS RESEARCH
The business research bureau gathers economic and business data
for each of the state's metropolitan statistical areas. It also
provides analysis and projections of economic activity in these
areas.
Reports: The bureau's Virginia Outlook newsletter is issued in
January, May and October; it provides updates in March, April,
August and December.

WELDON COOPER CENTER FOR PUBLIC SERVICE, UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA
The center's staff gathers information about demographic,
government and economic activity in Virginia.
Reports: The staff regularly publishes reports on employment,
income, population and other topics. Its Virginia Statistical
Abstract, a paperback reference book, provides statistics on
economic, financial, educational, demographic and agricultural
activity in the state.

VIRGINIA EMPLOYMENT COMMISSION
The VEC is the state agency responsible for collecting data on
employment and joblessness in Virginia. It distributes these figures
monthly and a more detailed set of employment and jobless figures
quarterly.
Reports: The commission puts out Economic Indicators, a quarterly
publication with statistical tables and essays about employment
trends in the state. The VEC also provides data on jobless rates,
employment by industry, and changes in the consumer price index by
fax machine. The service, dubbed VECSTAT, is available 24 hours a
day by calling (800) 282-4750. The commission also operates an
electronic bulletin board with figures on employment, income and
joblessness in Virginia. This service is nicknamed ALICE for the
Automated Labor Information on the Commonwealth's Economy. For
