JAYCEES SIX COUNTY FAIR COMING TO ELIZABETH CITY

The Jaycees Six County Fair, which starts Tuesday, is more than rides, food and entertainment.

It can be a money-maker for those who enter the contests that offers prizes for the best of anything from baked beans to billy goats.

``We have some old ladies that will walk away with $200 to $300 in their pocket,'' said Denise Jones, chairman of the 37th annual fair.

Hundreds of entries fall into 40 groups and will be judged at the fair on Monday. First prize ranges from $3 for best vegetable to $30 for best pig.

So far, no one has entered a pig. If one pig is the only entry then it wins.

``We have lots of money and we give it all away,'' Jones said.

The Jaycees are also holding contests for educational exhibits. .

Jones expects about 14,000 people to attend this year.

On Tuesday, there will be a beauty pageant for girls ages 5 through 8 and another for girls ages 9 through 12. Entry is $7. No special costumes, just Sunday or party dresses.

Wednesday night is Kids Night. All youths through high school get $1 off on admission. Local band August will play.

On Thursday, the Chrome Pony Mustang Club will demonstrate restored cars. Thursday is also retro night. Fair visitors can wear bell bottoms, platform shoes and leisure suits. The best dressed for the late '60s will win $50.

On Friday, the blues band Dime Store Lovers will play.

The fair closes Sept. 13.
