BECAUSE SOLID COLORS like brown, black and gray provide the basis for fall dressing, it is up to our fashion accents to add brightness and excitement. And makeup can provide just the dash of color needed.
Estee Lauder is basing its fall collection on variations of brown, infusing the best browns with hits of unexpected color.
``We've combined colors that don't traditionally `go together' to invent shades that make perfect sense right now,'' says Dominique Szabo, senior vice president for product development.
``Take deep purple and bright blue, for example. Apart, they're ordinary; together, they're new, compelling and altogether fresh.''
On lips, tomato red in Bonfire, deep caramels in Upside Brown and plum-grape cooled with blue in Wildberry make fresh statements.
At Lancome, the Attitude line reflects the eggplants, spicy neutrals and mossy tones of the season. Lip shades appear in Risque, a deep plum, and Henne, a brown tone with shimmer; fall eyeliner colors include violets and greens. A caution: Use these sparingly to enhance and not distract.
In general, fall makeup calls for well-applied foundation and powder to create matte faces warmed with soft washes of blush topped with deep lip tones.
Emphatic eyes may not be for everyone, so apply color according to the demands of the day, not the trends of the moment.
With tweeds and plaids so pervasive, color should be in great demand. And with the return of gray comes a renewed interest in strong charcoal smudging, a darker eye that some may embrace - or turn a cheek to. ILLUSTRATION: [Color Photo]
