James Archibald Johnson Jr., 77, a native of Franklin and a resident of Richmond since 1941, died Sept. 9, 1997, after an illness of several months.
He was a graduate of the College of William and Mary and was a chemist for the state of Virginia for 47 years. At the time of his retirement in 1988 he was supervisor of the Seed and Fertilizer Laboratory, Division of Consolidated Laboratories. He was a nationally known numismatist and collector, a past president of both the American Numismatic Association and the Virginia Numismatic Association and was a member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors. He was a Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Northside Lodge, A.F.&A.M., Richmond. Mr. Johnson was a lifelong member of the Franklin Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. John William Johnson, and is survived by two sisters, Mrs. James F. Briggs Jr. of Franklin and Mrs. William A. Wright of Richmond; nine nephews and nieces; and 11 great-nephews and nieces.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday in Bennett's Funeral Home, Richmond. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Poplar Spring Cemetery, Franklin. It is suggested that gifts be made to the Memorial Fund of Franklin Baptist Church in lieu of flowers. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
