BULLETIN BOARD

SUFFOLK

Cutting kindergarten from full to half days. Increasing class sizes. Running two shifts per day at each school. Eliminating art, music and separate special education classes.

These ideas and others are being considered by the School Board-appointed Alternative Methods Committee as emergency ways to handle Suffolk's rapidly growing public-school enrollment if new schools aren't funded and can't be built. Now the committee has scheduled two public hearings to receive comments, concerns and other ideas from parents and other residents.

The hearings are Sept. 23, at Lakeland High School at 215 Kenyon Road, and Sept. 25, at Nansemond River High School at 3301 Nansemond Parkway. Both hearings begin at 7 p.m.

Written comments may be sent to The Alternative Methods Committee, c/o Suffolk Public Schools, P.O. Box 1549, Suffolk, Va. 23439-1549. For more information, call the school system's central office at 925-5500.

NORFOLK

Applications are being accepted from area college student artists to participate in the Student Exhibit of the Stockley Gardens Fall Arts Festival. Students may submit up to three works for a jury to consider at Calvin & Lloyd at 140 Granby St. in Norfolk. The jury may select one or more pieces per student for exhibit and competition at the arts festival on Oct. 18 and 19.

A festival judge will make three Futures Awards for student pieces: $150 for first place, $100 for second and $50 for third. The deadline for student applications is Sept. 24. For applications and more information, call the Hope House Foundation at 625-6161. All proceeds from the festival benefit the foundation.

Old Dominion University's admissions office will conduct tours of the campus for prospective students and their parents at 10 a.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. Saturdays during the fall semester.

Those interested in studying at ODU also may talk with admissions counselors during new walk-in hours - 1 to 3 p.m. weekdays - or by appointment.

For more information or to schedule a tour, call 683-3637.
