PRIVATE SCHOOLS CROSS COUNTRY

Greenbrier Christian's cross country teams return the best individual runners in school history, but neither the boys nor the girls team is expected to contend for championships in the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools.

At Atlantic Shores, four returnees have coach Randy Nieter looking forward to the boys cross country season.

Here's a look at the two Chesapeake private school's prospects in cross country:

GREENBRIER CHRISTIAN

Coach: Dicky Sherrill

Top boy runners: Greg Pickler, Chris Kornman, Grey Brothers, Brendan Black

Top girls runners: Aimee Gibbs, Jackie Fuller, Amanda Naghio, Rachel Moore, Sarah Cuthrell, Felecia Thurman

Boys outlook: Although just a ninth grader, Pickler is the school record-holder in the 3,200 and is a threat to break the Gators' record in every course they run on. Kornman is a solid performer and Brothers and transfer Black have promise.

Girls outlook: Gibbs, a sophomore, is the all-time best distance runner for Greenbrier and holds school records in the 5K, 3,200 and 1,600. Fuller and Naghio are right on her heels in the 1,600 and 3,200, respectively. Moore, a top 800 runner, will be tested at the longer distance.

ATLANTIC SHORES

Coach: Ralph Nieter

Top runners: Tony Lutz, Chad Ward, Jordan Palser, Will Hart, Eliezer Lee, Kenny Lutz, Brian Easton

Outlook: The Seahawks lost only two runners to graduation, thus returning a veteran team. Tony Lutz is expected to be the team's outstanding runner.
