Sylvia Shell, born Dec. 21, 1933, died Sept. 10, 1997.
She was a great person who loved life and family and shined brilliantly in every opportunity she encountered. Although she was retired, she took pleasure in continuing to help people. The mother of nine children, she was formerly married to Bernard Shell Sr. A native of Portsmouth, she had been a resident of Covington for the last three years, and resided in Norfolk for more than 25 years.
Survivors include Virginia B. Paschall of Virginia Beach, LeMarr Shell of Norfolk, Bernard Shell Jr. of Covington, Terry Shell of Connecticut, Andrea Codwell of Norfolk, Cynthia Hooker of Virginia Beach, Kenneth Shell of Covington, Carlton Shell of Norfolk, and Sharrod Shell of Covington. Her 14 grandchildren include Quentin Merchant, Temiah Smith, Dwight Paschall, Brittney Freeman, Kiera Freeman, Ashley Shell, Shira Shell, Sherrell Eley, Sherman Eley, Darryl Mullen, Jolan Mullen, Bernard Shell III, Justin Shell and Lataunyia Morris. She had a great-grandchild, Andrew Grossman, and many family members and friends.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15, at Church of God in Christ, 414 Mercer St., Covington. Family and friends will assemble at 444 W. Riverside Ave., Covington.
