Vernon Kennedy Jones, born Sept. 18, 1926, died Sept. 13, 1997, at Virginia Beach General Hospital, from an extended illness.
Vern was a master sergeant and scout in the infantry in World War II. He attended Broadcasting and Journalism School in Hartford, Conn., then went on to become news director and anchor for WAVY TV Channel 10 from 1959 to 1969. He took a two-year hiatus from WAVY for the Norfolk Area Medical Center Authority, where he was director of Public Information. He was then bureau chief and White House correspondent for UPI during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. He became director of Fundraising and Public Relations for Eastern Virginia Medical School, during which time the first invitro-fertilized baby was born. Finally, he retired from Old Dominion University as director of Student Affairs. Vern held a master of arts in Urban Affairs and Human Resources from Norfolk State University.
Vern is well-loved by family and friends, and was an excellent husband and father. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Chris Jones; his son, Vernon K. Jones Jr.; and his daughter, Lisa A. Epperson.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 3 p.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
