EDWARD J. MORTON

Edward James Morton, 92, departed this life Tuesday, Sept. 9, 1997, at Martha Jefferson Hospital.

He was born May 6, 1905, in Craven County, N.C., son of Edward James Morton and Agnes Jane Riggs Morton.

He is survived by a son, Edward James Morton Jr.; daughter-in-law, Karen Carpenter Morton; three grandchildren, Edward Lee Morton of Charlottesville, Wendey Morton Jensen, James Paul Morton of New Jersey. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews in North Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Annie Pearl Combs Morton; nine brothers, Calvin David Morton, John Wesley Morton, Andrew Jackson Morton, George Dewey Morton, Sterling Grant Morton, Stephen Bryant Morton, infant Tobe Morton, Patrick Henry Morton and Clarence McKinley Morton; and three sisters, Janie Morton Weatherington, Lillie Ann Morton Davis and Carrie Lou Morton.

He spent his primary adult years in Norfolk, living in Fairmont Park and working at the Norfolk Naval Air Station. For most of his adult life, he was an active member and deacon of Trinity Baptist Church, Norfolk. His last 11 years were spent with his son, Edward, in Charlottesville. He was a member of Effort Baptist Church of Palmyra, Va., and was known for his gardening and flowers, which kept him active until his last two months.

A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Sept. 13 at Don-Lee Cemetery, Arapahoe, N.C., by the Rev. David Cauley. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society or Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 160, Charlottesville, Va. 22902. Bryant Funeral Home, Alliance, N.C., is in charge. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
