YATES STIRLING III

Ret. U.S. Navy Capt. Yates Stirling III, 92, died Sept. 14, 1997, in East Pavilion.

Born in Manila, Philippines, he was the son of the late Rear Adm. Yates Stirling Jr. and Adelaide Egbert Stirling. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1926 and began his career as a naval aviator. During World War II, he served in the Pacific Theater as an officer in the Supply Corps. Following retirement from the Navy, he worked for the Equitable Life Assurance Co., taught math at Norfolk Academy in Norfolk, did graduate work at VPI and was an associate professor of engineering at Old Dominion University, Norfolk. He was an active member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Norfolk, serving on the the vestry as junior warden.

Mr. Stirling is survived by his wife of 62 years, Catherine Armstrong Stirling; a son, Yates Stirling IV, and his wife, Linda, of San Diego, Calif.; a daughter, Suzanne Stirling Duffey, and her husband, Ben, of Franklin; three sisters, Ellen S. Sullivan of Lutherville, Md., Katherine Gordon Ilk of Baltimore, Md., and Adelaide S. Boyd of Portland, Ore.; a brother, Harry E. Stirling, and his wife, Lee, of McLean, Va.; four grandchildren, Frederick M. Quayle Jr., Catherine S. Quayle, both of New York City, Heather A. Stirling and Scott C. Stirling, both of San Diego.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Emmanual Episcopal Church by the Rev. Ben Duffey and the Rev. Edmund Pickup. Wright Funeral Home is in charge. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
