LEMUEL H. CANNON JR.

Lemuel Hooker Cannon Jr., 81, died Sept. 17, 1997, in a Hospice of Union County.

Mr. Cannon was born Sept. 6, 1916, in New Bern, N.C., to the late Lemuel Hooker Cannon and Cora Mallard Cannon. In 1949, he graduated from N.C. State University with a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering. He served with the U.S. Army Infantry during World War II in the European Theatre. On Oct. 3, 1953, he married the former Margaret Stephenson.

Mr. Cannon's career as a professional mechanical engineer included employment with the Newport News Shipbuilding Co. In 1979, after 17 years of service, he retired from Central Piedmont Community College, Charlotte, N.C., as head of the Engineering and Technology Department. For more than 20 years, Mr. Cannon was the owner of Strawberry Acres Nursery in Charlotte. He will always be remembered for his love of azaleas.

In addition to his wife of 46 years, Margaret Cannon, he is survived by his daughter, Kebbie Cannon of Charlotte; his daughter and son-in-law, Sherry Cannon Rouse and Alan Rouse of Atlanta, Ga., and their children, Melody and Laura Rouse; his sisters, Thelma McGowan and Helen Newborn, both of Franklin, Va., his sister, Margaret Lowder of Fayetteville, N.C.; his sister-in-law, Jean Cannon of Raleigh, N.C.; and also several nieces and nephews. Mr. Cannon was preceded in death by his sisters, Mildred Stallings and Carolyn Gilbert, and his brother, Jack Cannon.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. today in the Chapel of Williams-Dearborn Funeral Service, Matthews, with Dr. Allen Schuyler officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A second Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Millfield Baptist Church, Berlin, Va. Interment will follow the service Saturday in the churchcemetery.
