VIRGINIA BEACH
The city is seeking neighborhood activists and other grass-roots leaders for the fall session of the Virginia Beach Neighborhood Institute.
Registration deadline is Oct. 10. Class size is limited to 25.
The institute aims to:
Expand the pool of skilled neighborhood leaders.
Broaden understanding of city government and the community.
Foster partnerships.
Encourage the building of a shared vision.
Enhance abilities of residents to solve problems on their own or in cooperation with other neighborhoods or institutions.
Classes will be held on Tuesdays, 6:30 to 9 p.m., beginning with an Oct. 14 orientation, featuring Mayor Meyera E. Oberndorf. Also, there will be neighborhood tours and field trips on some Saturdays. The session concludes Dec. 16.
There is a $10 registration fee.
The program is conducted by the Virginia Beach Department of Housing and Neighborhood Preservation and the Norfolk State University School of Social Sciences.
