IN ISLE OF WIGHT, THE CAMPAIGN STARTED OVERSEAS

What worked in Zweibruchen and Worms is working in Isle of Wight County.

Phil Frix says he first became involved with United Way while he was in the Army and stationed in Germany .

``I was part of the Federal Campaign for the bases in Zweibruchen and Worms.,'' he said. ``I was involved with United Way before that, and when I came back to Smithfield I became involved, locally.''

For the second consecutive year, Frix is chairman of the Isle of Wight County campaign which is attempting to raise $103,000 this year.

Those monies will be distributed during an Oct. 16 luncheon at the YMCA, at which time a mid-campaign report will be offered.

The money is divided between 13 organizations serving the county and Smithfield.

``United Way supports programs the community relies on, programs the government does not have the money to support,'' Frix said. ``We have to raise the money, and I like helping people.

``My job is all about that - helping people meet their financial needs and goals,'' said Frix, an investment representative for Edward Jones Investment in Smithfield.

The United Way campaign continues through Nov. 20. It is relying on volunteers to raise the money and educate the public.

``A lot of people don't know what United Way does. We've been doing a lot of education the last two years,'' Frix said. ``And, we're giving everyone the opportunity to contribute, to help the charity they're interested in.''
