IN GENERAL

SHIP VISITS: Two Navy ships will be open to the public from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The guided- missile cruiser Anzio will be at Norfolk Naval Station. Visitors should enter through Gate 2. The tank landing ship Lamoure County will be at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base. Visitors should enter through Gate 1.

COMMUNITY FESTIVAL: Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth will host the All-American Community Festival, a celebration of cultural diversity, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at Trophy Park. Visitors should enter through Gate 3, just off First Street along the Elizabeth River. The free event includes performances by country singer Jeff Wood, the Atlantic Fleet Band and numerous other entertainers, as well as food vendors, a health awareness tent and children's rides. MILLER HONORED: Ann B. Miller of Norfolk has been named Engineer of the Year for the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Atlantic Division. A structural engineer, she is known for her expertise in design of magazine and weapons storage facilities as well as safety regulations for handling, storing, producing and shipping ammunition and explosives. She is leading a design team for a $29 million Department of Defense Dependents School in Italy.

MARINE BALL: The Hampton Roads All Ranks Marine Corps Ball will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at the Marriott Waterside in Norfolk. The cost is $45 per person for officers and retirees, $40 for senior non-commissioned officers and $35 for E-5 and below. Tickets are available starting Monday by calling 889-1536.

ADMIRAL NOMINEES: Two Norfolk-based officers have been nominated for promotion to rear admiral (lower half). Nominees are Capt. Charles R. Kubic, vice commander of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Atlantic Division, and Capt. Barry C. Black, chaplain with the U.S. Atlantic Fleet.

COMINGS AND GOINGS

The amphibious assault ship Bataan, commissioned Saturday in Pascagoula, Miss., is scheduled to arrive at its new home port of Norfolk at 10 a.m. Monday at Pier 5 of Norfolk Naval Station. Commanded by Capt. Craig T. Wilson, it has a crew of about 1,200. The Bataan, the fifth ship of the Wasp class, is a 40,000-ton, 844-foot-long helicopter and troop carrier.

The Coast Guard cutter Harriet Lane returns to Portsmouth at 4 p.m. Monday, following a 61-day deployment. The cutter and its 100 crewmen participated in Unitas 38-97, a multinational exercise. While on deployment, the crew also conducted 21 maritime law enforcement exercises, 18 search and rescue exercises, presented 300 pounds of clothing to a girls' orphanage in Ecuador and made repairs there.

The Military Sealift Command towing/salvage ship Apache deploys Monday for six months in the Mediterranean Sea. The ship and 16-member crew is commanded by Merchant Marine Capt. J.H. Doane of Hampton. The four-man Navy contingent is commanded by Chief R.A. Bost of Philadelphia. The 16-man Navy diving and salvage team is commanded by Chief Warrant Officer Tom Ross of Virginia Beach.

The Military Sealift Command oiler Laramie deployed Wednesday for six months in the Mediterranean Sea. Commanded by Merchant Marine Capt. Robert J. Russell, the ship has 86 civil service mariners. Lt. j.g. Alex Middleton of Columbus, Ga., is in charge of the 23-member Navy department.
