SUFFOLK
Two new science enrichment camps will be offered on Saturdays this fall for fourth- and sixth-graders. Fourth-graders will use computers and hands-on activities to solve science problems. Sixth-graders will work with computers, bridge-building kits, functional model planes and paper towers.
To qualify, students must be recommended by a teacher or guidance counselor, and have scored in the 85th percentile or higher on the Stanford 9 standardized achievement test or equivalent. The registration deadline is Oct. 6. There is a $25 fee.
Sessions will be at Nansemond River High School from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 18 and 25, and Nov. 1, 8, 15 and 22. Call school guidance counselors for more information and registration forms.
CHESAPEAKE
The School Board will have a busy night Monday as decisions are expected on the superintendent's proposed 10-year Capital Improvement Plan and on a proposal to require a 2.0 grade point average for students who participate in sports and other Virginia High School League activities.
The board will also hold two public hearings, one on the Capital Improvement Plan and another on the use of the old Truitt Junior High School building. The public hearings, followed by the regular meeting, start at 7 p.m. in the school administration building at 312 Cedar Road. Those wishing to speak before the board should call 547-1047.
HAMPTON
Hampton University will formally celebrate the opening of the academic year with its 55th convocation on Sunday, Oct. 5. The speaker will be Kenneth I. Chenault, president of American Express Co.
The event is free and open to the public. It begins at 10:45 a.m. in the Convocation Center. For more information, call 727-5253.
