1 WOMAN DIES, 3 PASSENGERS HURT IN SINGLE-CAR WRECK

One woman died and three elderly passengers were hurt Thursday when the car they were in went out of control, struck a tree and overturned, police said.

It was not immediately clear, however, if the woman who died succumbed to injuries from the wreck or from a pre-existing condition. She was identified as Sarah A. Outlaw, 59, of the 300 block of E. Olney Road, the driver.

Police said the wreck occurred at 5:29 p.m. in the 500 block of East Virginia Beach Blvd. The 1989 Hyundai Outlaw was eastbound.

Outlaw was pronounced dead at the scene. ``We're not sure if she died as a result of the accident,'' said Larry Hill, a police spokesman. ``She may have been having difficulties prior to the accident.''

Her body was sent to the State Medical Examiner's office for an examination.

The three women riding with her, ages from 65, 72 and 75, were taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment of assorted life-threatening injuries. KEYWORDS: ACCIDENT TRAFFIC FATALITY
