George E. Shipley, 71, a retired rehabilitation counselor, died on Sept. 24, 1997, at Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park after a long illness.
Born and raised in Berkley, Va., he was the son of the late James and Susan Shipley. Mr. Shipley resided in Secane since 1955. For the last 50 years, he also maintained a home and spent his summers in Warrensburg, N.Y. in the eastern Adirondack Mountains. He was retired from the Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation, Department of Labor and Industry of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1984, where he was a vocational rehabilitation counselor for 20 years.
Mr. Shipley was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during World War II in the Hospital Corps in the Pacific Theater and later as an instructor in the Blind Rehabilitation Program in Philadelphia. After discharge from the service, he continued to work with the blind in the Philadelphia and Delaware County area for 15 years.
Mr. Shipley did his undergraduate work at Temple University with additional studies at the University of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Shipley was a member of Christ Church in Ridley Park, where after retirement he especially enjoyed volunteer work. His hobbies were reading, hand crafts, and home and garden projects.
Mr. Shipley is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Lydia Langworthy Shipley; a daughter, Suzanne Henderson of Ithaca, N.Y.; two granddaughters, Leslie and Alaina Henderson of Ithaca; two brothers, Alvah Shipley of Chesapeake, Va. and Shelton Shipley of Virginia Beach; a sister, Susan Gimbert of Virginia Beach; and several nieces and nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by five brothers and five sisters.
A Holy Eucharist memorial service will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at Christ Church, Sellers Ave. and Nevin St., Ridley Park. Arrangements are by the Griffith Funeral Chapel in Norwood. Memorial contributions made in Mr. Shipley's name to Christ Church, Ridley Park, Pa. 19078 would be appreciated by the family.
