EMMA R. JAMES

Emma Richardson ``Emma Bess'' James, 101, of the 100 block of East 40th St., died Sept. 27, 1997, in her residence.

Mrs. James was a native and lifelong resident of Norfolk. She was preceded in death by her parents, Captain Edward and Roberta Day Richardson. She was the widow of Orris B. James Sr. She was a lifelong member of Freemason Street Baptist Church in Norfolk, and had the distinction of being its most senior member in age and length of membership.

Survivors include a son, O.B. James Jr. of Williamsburg; and two grandchildren, Ned James of Virginia Beach and Sarah J. Burleson of Lexington, Va.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Forest Lawn Cemetery by Dr. Donald J. Dunlap. Memorial donations may be made to Freemason Street Baptist Church or the Lydia Roper Home. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, will be handling the arrangements. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
