Once again, Dare County's participation in North Carolina's Big Sweep project was a success. On Saturday, Sept. 20, about 600 people went out to clean up the beaches and waterways in our area. Thanks to each and every one of you who helped to keep Dare County a beautiful place to live and visit.
One participant wrote on the comment form, ``Wouldn't it be a better world if everyone gave just 15 minutes of their time?'' Many people gave that and much more. This includes all the site volunteers who pass out trash bags, the public employees who handle the extra trash collected, the organizers and workers at Trash Fest, and the members of the Outer Banks Surf-riders Foundation. I would like to express my gratitude for their cooperation, time and effort.
I would also like to thank the area radio stations, newspapers, and Falcon Cable for their help in publicizing this event. Getting the word out helps increase participation and adds to the success of this project.
Thanks again to all who got involved in Big Sweep 1997. I hope we can continue to make this community effort a fun and a successful event for many years to come.
Joan Van Newenhizer,
Outer Banks Surfriders Foundation
