AVA A. CARROLL

Ava Abia Mann Carroll, born Oct. 14, 1895, in Princess Anne County, went home to our Lord Sept. 28, 1997.

Mrs. Carroll was the widow of Aaron E. Carroll. Mrs. Carroll was quite a remarkable woman. In her 101 plus years on this earth, she had seen the automobile become the primary transportation instead of the horse and buggy, electricity and plumbing in our homes as being standard, the airplane as a regular means of transportation and even space exploration as a routine of life. Mrs. Carroll was one of the first women in Princess Anne County (now Virginia Beach) to run a business. She became the operator of Carroll's Motor Service in 1955 when her husband became ill. She operated Carroll's Motor Service in partnership with her late son, Warren D. Carroll for numerous years. On her 100th birthday, the mayor of Virginia Beach declared it Ava Carroll day. At the time of her death, Mrs. Carroll was the oldest living member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church. She had joined Tabernacle in the early 1900s. One of Mrs. Carroll's proudest achievements was being the church organist at Tabernacle UMC for more than 60 years, and she also had served as a Sunday School teacher at Tabernacle.

Mrs. Carroll is survived by her daughter, Denie E. Biondino, and her husband, Nicholas J. Biondino. Also by her grandchildren, Gloria H. Stellwag and Carol A. Holden of Knotts Island, N.C., John S. Harlow Jr. of Mooresville, N.C., Warren D. Carroll, Jackie Spruill, Bobbie McGraw, Brenda Modlin, Carroll L. Palmer and Broughton Palmer Jr., all of Virginia Beach; numerous great-grandchildren and many great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Carroll was predeceased by her sons, Kenneth E. Carroll, Warren D. Carroll and her daughter, Hazel M. Morris.

The family will receive friends in Maestas Funeral Home, Baltic Ave. Chapel, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Tabernacle United Methodist Church, 1264 Sandbridge Road by the Rev. Jack E. Davis, pastor, and the Rev. Frank T. Jennings. Burial will follow in Charity United Methodist Church Cemetery. Immediately following the burial, the family would like to invite friends and family members to share in refreshments in Tabernacle UMC Social Hall. Please omit flowers. Donations may be made to Tabernacle United Methodist Church Music Fund, 1265 Sandbridge Road, Virginia Beach, Va. 23456. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
